Situated majestically on the banks of the Godavari River, the Sri Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple at Bhadrachalam is the ultimate destination for Rama devotees in South India. It is uniquely famous for its presiding deity—where Lord Rama is depicted with four arms like Lord Vishnu, with Goddess Sita seated on his lap, and Lakshmana standing by his side.

Historical ManagementConstructed in the 17th century by Kancharla Gopanna (popularly known as Bhakta Ramadasu), the local revenue official under the Golconda Sultanate (Qutb Shahi dynasty). Today, it is one of the most prominent temples administered by the Telangana State Endowments Department.

The History

The temple's physical construction is a legendary tale of devotion. In the 17th century, Kancharla Gopanna, a devout Tahsildar, used the state's tax revenue to build this magnificent stone temple for Lord Rama. Furious, the Sultan of Golconda, Abul Hasan Qutb Shah (Tanisha), imprisoned Gopanna in the dark dungeons of the Golconda Fort for 12 years, during which Gopanna composed heartbreakingly beautiful Telugu kirtanas (devotional songs) that are still sung today.

Sacred Architecture

Dravidian Elegance on the Godavari

The temple features classic Dravidian architecture with a tall Rajagopuram facing the serene Godavari River. Devotees must climb a flight of stairs to reach the main courtyard, symbolizing the ascent of the Bhadra hill. The temple is famous for its massive mandapams, particularly the Kalyana Mandapam, where the celestial wedding is performed. Adjacent to the main temple is a dedicated museum that houses the ancient, original jewelry made by Bhakta Ramadasu for the deities.

Legend of the Deity

The name 'Bhadrachalam' comes from Sage Bhadra (the child of Mount Meru), who performed intense penance to see Lord Rama. Rama, busy searching for the abducted Sita, promised to return to Bhadra after his mission. However, Rama could not fulfill this during his mortal Treta Yuga lifetime. To keep his promise, long after his avatar ended, Lord Vishnu manifested here directly as 'Vaikuntha Rama' with four arms (holding the conch, discus, bow, and arrow) to bless the sage, who transformed into the hill (Bhadradri) upon which the Lord now resides.

Worship & Rituals

Worship here is deeply intertwined with state tradition. Ever since the era of the Qutb Shahi Sultans, and continuing through the Nizams of Hyderabad to the modern democratically elected Chief Ministers of Telangana, it is a strict official tradition for the Head of State to personally present silk robes (Pattu Vastralu) and pearls (Mutyala Talambralu) to the deities on the day of Sri Rama Navami on behalf of the government. The most powerful true legend of the temple revolves around the Ramamadas (Golden Coins). When Bhakta Ramadasu was being tortured in the Golconda prison for the missing treasury funds, two young, extraordinarily handsome warriors named Ram Singh and Lakshman Singh suddenly appeared in the Sultan's chambers at midnight. They paid the exact debt in heavy gold coins and took a receipt to release Ramadasu. The next morning, the Sultan realized it was Lord Rama and Lakshmana themselves. The Sultan immediately released Ramadasu, became his disciple, and endowed the temple with permanent grants. Astonishingly, a few of those exact, miraculously given gold coins (Ramamadas)—inscribed with the images of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana—are still physically preserved in the temple museum today!

Festivals

Sri Rama Navami is not just a temple festival; it is celebrated as an official State Festival. The highlight is the Sri Sitarama Thirukalyana Mahotsavam (the celestial wedding). Another massive event is Vaikuntha Ekadasi, where a grand Teppotsavam (float festival) is held on the Godavari River, drawing lakhs of pilgrims.
