Rising dramatically above the lush green paddy fields and the winding Tungabhadra river, Anjanadri Hill is universally revered as the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. Located in Anegundi (the mythical monkey kingdom of Kishkindha), this sacred hill is crowned by a striking, white-washed temple that shines brightly against the rugged, boulder-strewn landscape of the Deccan plateau.

Historical ManagementWhile the physical hill is an ancient natural formation deeply tied to the Treta Yuga, the current structural shrines are relatively modern. The site is managed by local temple trusts under the broader supervision of the Karnataka Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department and local Anegundi authorities.

The History

According to the Ramayana, this entire region was the kingdom of Kishkindha, ruled by the Vanara kings Vali and Sugriva. While the sprawling stone temples of neighboring Hampi were built by the Vijayanagara emperors much later, Anjanadri has been a site of ascetic penance and devotion for millennia, drawing wandering sadhus and devotees retracing the footsteps of Lord Rama.

Sacred Architecture

A Stairway to the Sky

Unlike the intricately carved stone monuments of Hampi, the architecture of the Anjanadri temple is beautifully humble. The shrine is a simple, white-washed structure built perfectly to accommodate the natural granite boulders of the peak. The journey to the top involves a zigzagging, steep climb of exactly 575 steps. The summit offers an unparalleled, 360-degree panoramic view of the ancient Kishkindha landscape, featuring endless coconut groves, the glistening river, and the ruins of the Vijayanagara empire.

Legend of the Deity

The hill is named after Mother Anjana Devi. According to the epic lore, Anjana performed intense, agonizing penance on this very hill for thousands of years to appease Lord Shiva and be blessed with a child. Pleased with her devotion, the Wind God (Vayu) delivered the divine blessing to her. Consequently, she gave birth to Anjaneya (Hanuman)—an avatar of Lord Shiva's divine energy and the ultimate devotee of Lord Rama.

Worship & Rituals

Worship is visceral and physically demanding. Ascending the 575 steps bare-footed is considered an act of deep penance. The main deity is a simple, powerful relief of Lord Hanuman carved directly into a natural rock face, covered in vibrant orange sindoor (vermilion). Devotees traditionally tie coconuts wrapped in red cloth to the temple structures, praying for strength, courage, and the removal of life's obstacles.

The hill is home to hundreds of macaque and langur monkeys. In local folklore, these are not just animals, but the direct, living descendants of the legendary 'Vanara Sena' (Monkey Army) that helped Lord Rama build the bridge to Lanka. Devotees believe that feeding bananas to these monkeys is physically equivalent to offering Naivedyam (food) directly to Lord Hanuman. Additionally, travelers globally consider the sunset view from Anjanadri to be one of the most spiritually profound visual experiences in all of India.

Festivals

The hill explodes with energy and devotion during Hanuman Janmotsav (Hanuman Jayanti), drawing massive crowds of pilgrims who chant the Hanuman Chalisa continuously. Sri Rama Navami is also celebrated with immense fervor, echoing the inseparable bond between Lord Rama and his supreme devotee.

Daily Schedule

Visiting Hours: Daily from 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
(Note: Devotees must climb approximately 575 steep stone steps. It is highly recommended to climb during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat and to witness the spectacular sunrise or sunset.)
