Sacred Architecture
Kerala Architecture and the Holy Steps
The temple features elegant, traditional Kerala-style architecture with a distinct gold-plated roof topping the Sannidhanam (sanctum). The most sacred architectural element of the entire complex is the Pathinettam Padi (The 18 Holy Steps) leading up to the shrine, which are encased in gold. Devotees are strictly permitted to climb these steps only if they are carrying the 'Irumudi Kettu' on their head, signifying they have fully observed the 41-day penance.Legend of the Deity

The sighting of the Makara Jyothi is the absolute pinnacle of Sabarimala's mystique. While its exact nature is debated, millions view it as a celestial phenomenon shown by the gods to mark the culmination of the pilgrimage. Furthermore, the three-day journey of the sacred jewels (Thiruvabharanam) from Pandalam to Sabarimala is said to be miraculously escorted every single year by a solitary Brahminy Kite (Krishnaparunthu) flying directly above the procession, acting as the divine messenger of Lord Vishnu.
