Fondly known as 'Gopurala Mamidada' (The Mamidada of Towers), Gollalamamidada is a lush green agricultural village in Andhra Pradesh that boasts unexpectedly towering, magnificent temples. It is primarily famous for two spectacular shrines: a grand Sri Rama Temple with a staggering 170-foot Rajagopuram, and a beautiful Surya Narayana (Sun God) temple situated serenely in the middle of a lake.

Historical ManagementThe development of these magnificent temples is largely attributed to the immense devotion and philanthropy of the local prominent personalities and zamindars, particularly the late Sri Kovvuri Basivi Reddy, who transformed this agricultural village into a major spiritual hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The History

Unlike ancient, thousand-year-old stone temples, the grandeur of Gollalamamidada is a relatively modern marvel, built largely in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The vision, agricultural wealth, and devotion of local philanthropists turned a quiet farming village into a spectacular pilgrimage destination renowned for its towering architecture, peaceful environment, and pristine maintenance.

Sacred Architecture

Towers, Mirrors, and Water

The village offers a unique architectural duality.

Sri Rama Temple: The hallmark of this temple is its staggering 170-foot tall East Rajagopuram (Gateway Tower) adorned with thousands of intricate stucco figures of gods and epics. Inside, the Addala Meda (Mirror House) is a visual treat; the ceiling and walls are covered in thousands of reflective glass pieces and Belgian mirrors, creating endless reflections of the deities placed inside.

Sri Surya Narayana Temple: This breathtaking temple is built squarely in the center of a large Pushkarini (sacred pond). It is architecturally designed to look like a celestial chariot, complete with giant stone wheels and seven stone horses emerging from the water. Devotees reach the main shrine by walking across a beautifully constructed bridge over the pond.

Legend of the Deity

The village honors two distinct traditions in two separate major complexes.

The Sri Kodanda Rama Temple celebrates the life of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. It represents the ideal kingdom (Rama Rajya) and righteous living.

The Sri Surya Narayana Swamy Temple is dedicated to the Sun God. Worshipping Surya is believed to cure skin diseases, grant robust health, and bestow vitality. The temple is deeply symbolic, designed to represent the cosmic chariot of the Sun God, driven by the charioteer Aruna and drawn by seven horses, which symbolize the seven colors of light and the seven days of the week.

Worship & Rituals

Devotees typically visit both temples in a single trip to the village. A unique tradition at the Surya temple is offering prayers precisely at sunrise, absorbing the early morning rays reflecting off the water. At the Rama temple, participating in the evening Unjal Seva (swing ceremony) inside the glowing Mirror House is considered a highly auspicious and visually mesmerizing experience.

Festivals

Sri Rama Navami is celebrated with unmatched grandeur at the Rama Temple, featuring a spectacular Kalyanam (celestial wedding) of Rama and Sita that draws tens of thousands of villagers from across the Godavari districts. Ratha Saptami (the birth of the Sun God) is the primary festival at the Surya temple, where special rituals and chariot processions are performed at dawn.
