Historical ManagementThe temple was heavily patronized by the Peshwa rulers. Madhavrao Peshwa I, one of the greatest leaders of the Maratha Empire, was an ardent devotee and commissioned the grand wooden assembly hall. The temple is currently administered by the Chinchwad Devasthan Trust.
The History
Theur was the spiritual sanctuary of Madhavrao Peshwa. He spent the final, ailing moments of his life in the precincts of this temple, finding solace in the Lord. A memorial (Vrindavan) dedicated to his wife, Ramabai, who committed Sati nearby, stands as a testament to the site's historical gravity.
Sacred Architecture
The Peshwa's Teakwood Pavilion
The temple's most striking architectural feature is the massive Sabha Mandapa (assembly hall) built entirely of teak wood by Madhavrao Peshwa. In the center of this hall lies a beautifully carved black stone fountain. The main idol is east-facing, with its trunk turned to the left, and its eyes are adorned with sparkling diamonds. The temple complex is spacious, with paved stone courtyards that provide a naturally cooling environment.Legend of the Deity
Legend states that Sage Kapila possessed a magical, wish-granting jewel called 'Chintamani'. A greedy prince named Gana stole it. Kapila prayed to Ganesha, who fought a fierce battle under a Kadamba tree, defeated Gana, and retrieved the jewel. Sage Kapila respectfully placed the jewel around Ganesha's neck and requested him to reside there permanently to remove the worries of the world. Another legend says Lord Brahma meditated here to calm his own restless mind.
Worship & Rituals
Worship at Theur is focused on seeking mental clarity and peace. Devotees offer 'Durva' grass and Modaks, silently praying to be relieved of their worldly stresses. The serene atmosphere of the wooden hall encourages pilgrims to sit, chant, and meditate on the Lord's form.
Festivals
Bhadrapada Chaturthi and Magh Chaturthi are the major festivals. Uniquely, a special regional festival called Rama-Madhav Punyatithi is also observed here to commemorate the death anniversary of Peshwa Madhavrao and his wife Ramabai.
Modern Folklore & Truths
Modern folklore says that anyone suffering from severe depression, anxiety, or an overactive mind will find an unexplainable lightness of heart just by sitting quietly in the wooden assembly hall. Locals also believe that the Kadamba tree, under which the legendary battle took place, still holds the subtle, calming energy of the original Chintamani jewel.
