The History

The history of Penugonda dates back to the 11th century when it was the capital of a prosperous kingdom ruled by King Kusuma Sresti, an ideal king of the Vysya lineage. The town was a thriving hub of trade, spirituality, and peace.

The current temple complex marks the exact sacred ground (Homagundam) where Goddess Vasavi performed the act of Agni Pravesham (entering the sacred fire). Over the centuries, the Arya Vysya community has transformed this site into a brilliantly sculpted Dravidian temple complex that serves as the very root of their heritage.

Sacred Architecture

The 120-Foot Tower & The Colossal Panchaloha Idol

The temple is an exquisite example of vibrant Dravidian architecture. The complex is dominated by a spectacular seven-story, 120-foot high temple tower adorned with incredibly detailed and colorful stucco work depicting the life, Viswaroopam, and sacrifice of the Goddess.

A crowning jewel of this sacred complex is the recent installation of the world’s tallest 90-foot Panchaloha (five-metal alloy) idol of Matha Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari. This breathtaking engineering and spiritual marvel stands as a global beacon of her legacy.

The main sanctum is built directly over the sacred Homagundam (fire pit) area, radiating profound peace and maternal love.

Legend of the Deity

The legend of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari is one of the most powerful stories of female empowerment, integrity, and non-violence in Hindu lore.

King Kusuma Sresti and his wife Kusumamba, after performing intense penance to Lord Shiva, were blessed with twins: a boy, Virupaksha, and a miraculously beautiful girl, Vasavi, a direct incarnation of Goddess Adiparasakthi.

As Vasavi grew into a radiant maiden deeply devoted to Shiva, the powerful King Vishnu Vardhana visited Penugonda. Blinded by lust, he demanded her hand in marriage, threatening to annihilate the entire kingdom if refused. Since the king was already married and the match was unrighteous, her parents and the Vysya community firmly objected.

To avoid a bloody war that would slaughter thousands of innocent people, Vasavi chose the path of Ahimsa. On the day of the forced wedding, she decided to offer her body to the God of Fire (Agni). Inspired by her absolute moral courage, her parents and 102 couples from the 102 Gotras (lineages) of the community chose to leap into the Homam fire with her.

Just before the Agni Pravesham, Vasavi revealed her true, terrifying divine form (Viswaroopam), proving she was the Mother of the Universe. Upon learning of her sacrifice, the arrogant king's head shattered into pieces. After her departure from the mortal realm, Vasavi's soul was eternally elevated to the status of a deity.

Worship & Rituals

The worship of Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari is deeply rooted in the principles of Dharma, Ahimsa (Non-violence), and Philanthropy.

Devotees do not just pray for material wealth; they seek the courage to uphold righteousness. The Arya Vysya community, inspired by her teachings, is globally renowned for its immense charitable works, including building choultries (free lodgings), funding education, and organizing large-scale Annadanam (food donation) programs in almost every major pilgrimage center in India. This enduring spirit of charity is considered the highest and purest form of worship to the Goddess.

Festivals

Vasavi Jayanthi is the most grandly celebrated festival, marking the birth of the Goddess. The entire town of Penugonda and Arya Vysya communities worldwide erupt in devotion, conducting massive Annadanams (free food distribution) and homams.

Atmarpana Dinotsavam (The day of sacrifice) is observed with deep reverence, honoring the Goddess's commitment to Ahimsa and the supreme sacrifice of the 102 Gotrajas.

Navaratri is also celebrated with extraordinary grandeur, with the Goddess taking a different Alankaram (divine form) on each of the nine days.
