Situated on the flanks of the Bandarpoonch peak, the temple is accessible via a steep 6km trek from Janki Chatti. It is a site of extreme contrasts: the river water is ice-cold, while several thermal springs (Surya Kund) emerge from the rock at boiling temperatures right next to the temple.

The History

Yamunotri is traditionally the first stop on the Uttarakhand Char Dham circuit. Pilgrims travel from West to East (Yamunotri to Badrinath). The high-altitude sanctuary is a testament to the resilience of the Himalayan people, surviving deep snow and avalanches every winter.

Sacred Architecture

The Sanctuary of Steam and Stone

The temple is built of stone and wood in a traditional **Himalayan-Pahari style** with a conical roof. The **Divya Shila** (Divine Rock) is a massive boulder that must be worshipped before entering the main shrine. The most remarkable architectural/natural feature is the **Surya Kund**, a thermal spring where the water is so hot (approx. 88°C) that pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in cloth bags as 'Prasad'.

Legend of the Deity

Legend says that **Sage Asit** lived here and bathed in both the Ganga and the Yamuna. When he became too old to travel to Gangotri, a stream of the Ganga emerged next to the Yamuna just for him. The river is the daughter of **Surya** and **Saranyu**. It is believed that because Yama (Death) is her brother, anyone who bathes in her waters is spared the tortures of the underworld.

Worship & Rituals

Worship begins at the **Divya Shila**. After offering prayers there, pilgrims take a dip in the **Tapt Kund** (warm water tank) to prepare for the ice-cold main stream. The primary offering is the rice cooked in the Surya Kund, which is taken home as a divine blessing. The sound of the gushing river against the silent peaks makes for a deeply meditative experience.

Festivals

The Opening Ceremony on Akshaya Tritiya is a grand event where the 'Doli' (palanquin) of the Goddess is brought from her winter home in Kharsali. Yamuna Jayanti is also celebrated with great fervor, marking the birthday of the river.

Modern Folklore & Truths

Modern folklore says that **the mountains change color** depending on the Goddess's mood. Local guides claim that on certain clear days, the peak of Bandarpoonch glows with a golden hue that signals a 'successful' pilgrimage for those present. There is also a belief that the **herbs surrounding the Surya Kund** have unique healing properties, as they are 'steamed' naturally by the divine volcanic vents of the mountain.
